Royal Dux Bohemia Art Nouveau porcelain centrepiece with water bearer and giant clam shell, Czechoslovakia, circa 1920s

£415.00

This large porcelain centrepiece by Royal Dux Bohemia, dating to the 1920s, depicts a serene water bearer seated on a naturalistic rocky outcrop, pouring from a golden amphora into a stylised giant clam shell. Made in Czechoslovakia, the piece reflects the technical refinement and naturalistic influences typical of Royal Dux's interwar production, combining Art Nouveau fluidity with Neoclassical themes.

The figure is sculpted fully in the round, finished with a combination of matte and gloss glazes. Her cobalt blue draped gown contrasts with the matte ivory tone of her skin, emphasising the classical pose and graceful contours. The shell is decorated in warm ochres, sandy hues, and subtle marine tones, recalling Symbolist romanticism and the marine-inspired decorative arts of the early 20th century.

The composition and colour palette make this piece suitable for a range of interior styles, including Belle Époque, Art Nouveau, Classical Revival, and coastal-themed spaces. It is ideal for use as a table centrepiece, fruit bowl, or vessel for floral displays and dried botanicals.

Fully marked to the underside with the Royal Dux pink triangle mark (in use circa 1918–1945), impressed model number 1047, and green 'Made in Czechoslovakia' stamp.

Weight: 1262 g
Height: 25 cm / 9.84″
Width: 23 cm / 9.06″
Depth: 18 cm / 7.09″

Excellent antique condition. Colours remain vivid, and the gilding is bright and well-preserved. No chips, cracks, or restorations. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.

Royal Dux, founded in Bohemia in the mid-19th century, became internationally recognised for its high-quality figural sculptures and decorative porcelain. During the early 20th century, the factory embraced Art Nouveau and Symbolist influences, producing naturalistic works with richly modelled forms and subtle glazing techniques. Pieces from the interwar period are particularly prized for their artistic expression and technical excellence.
